The READ program at Burnley-Moran is a literacy program. Last year, 120 minutes of each 390 minute school day were dedicated to literacy instruction and the READ program. READ is an acronym for a group of words which the staff believes are central to literacy development and instruction: Read, Enrich, Achieve and Discover. The students’ lives are enriched in many ways as they read, make discoveries and achieve success as readers and writers.
Services Offered
Collaborative teaching, increased time and appropriate small group instruction are the keys to the READ program. At Burnley Moran Elementary, reading support personnel, classroom teachers, instructional assistants and school leaders are working together to insure that every student receives 120 minutes of daily literacy instruction at the appropriate instructional level. Scheduling for the READ program is staggered by grade level, allowing reading support personnel to teach at varied grade levels, decreasing the student to teacher ratio. Students are grouped within grades, kindergarten through fourth, to receive reading and word study instruction at appropriate levels for ninety minutes each day. Students enjoy an additional thirty minutes daily of read-aloud and writing instruction in heterogeneous homeroom groups. Frequent assessment and additional intervention are important components of the literacy program, insuring that instruction is appropriate and grouping remains fluid. The staff at Burnley-Moran strives to integrate social science and science content within their literacy instruction whenever possible.
Parent Involvement
The staff and parents of Burnley-Moran Elementary are celebrating learning together. They believe that every child deserves the opportunity to discover meaning as they explore the world of written language and become confident readers and writers in a safe and supportive learning environment. Burnley-Moran families are valued partners in this important venture of READing for all.
